Since coffee is commonly used all over the world, a review in 2010 focused on caffeine intake effects, evaluating the relationship between caffeine and psychiatric disorders. Besides the possibility of mild drug dependence, caffeine may bring benefits in terms of increased alertness, attention, and cognitive function and by elevating mood.
Accordingly, moderate caffeine intake (< 6 cups/day) has been associated with less depressive symptoms and fewer cognitive failures. Conversely, in rare cases high doses of caffeine may induce psychotic and manic symptoms, and more commonly, anxiety. Furthermore anxiogenic effect of caffeine has a genetic dependent threshold, related to a polymorphism of the A2A receptor.
Though further research is needed, caffeine can be considered a useful tool in order to increase energy and effortful behavior in daily activities.
