ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND TYRAMINE

Some antidepressants can interact with a naturally occurring substance in foods called tyramine. Drugs such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) can inhibit the tyramine metabolism in tyramine-rich foods leading to adverse circulatory reactions, which may be signalled by a throbbing headache.
Tyramine-rich foods: beans, yeast extract, meat extract, most cheeses, fermented soya bean extract and salted, smoked or pickled fish.
